ROSACEA

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory condition of the skin involving the central face, affecting 1 in 20 Australians aged between 30 to 60. It is common in those with fair skin, blue eyes and Celtic origins. It may be transient, recurrent, or persistent and results in red spots (papules) and sometimes pustules but unlike acne, there are no blackheads, whiteheads or nodules. Rosacea may also result in red areas, scaling (rosacea dermatitis) and swelling.

Rosacea is progressive and there are 4 sub types:

1. Erythematotelangiectatic – facial flushing, diffuse redness and telangiectasia

2. Papulopustular Rosacea – presence of papules and pustules at times of aggravation

3. Rhymatous Rosacea - Thickening of skin, particularly to nose

4. Ocular Rosacea – ocular involvement

Treatment involves reduction of the damages caused by the inflammation eg reducing diffuse redness and telangiectasia, therefore reducing heat in the skin and predisposition to papules and pustules.

There is no cure, only ongoing management to avoid progression of the condition. Treatment options can include injections with skin boosters and antiwrinkle, IPL, prescribed skin care, LED.
