Melasma

MELASMA 

 Melasma is a skin disorder that appears as patches of pigmentation on the face and/or body. Melanocytes overproduce melanin. A break down in the basal layer of the epidermis results in the pigmentation being deposited into the dermis. 

Melasma is more common in women then men. 

The cause is unknown, however there are known stimulants:

1. Hormonal increases
2. UVR exposure: sun damage
3. Medications
4. Stress
5. Intrauterine devices

There are 3 different categories of Melasma-

Epidermal Melasma: Most superficial type of pigmentation sits within the epidermis. Dark brown in appearance. 

Responds well to treatment. 

Dermal Melasma: Pigmentation has ‘Spilled’ into the dermis and sits deeper. Light brown or bluish appearance.

Responds poorly to treatment. 

Mixed Melasma: A combination of the above. The most common form. A combination of colours- bluish light brown with dark patches of brown.
