Mono threads are an increasingly popular skin tightening cosmetic procedure that work by inserting threads that cause collagen stimulation. Dermaluxe Injectables provides PDO mono thread treatments in Geelong, Colac and Ballarat ensuring patients are left with healthy and natural looking more youthful skin. Fine lines and skin folds are improved.
Skin aging involves a loss of collagen and thinning of elastic fibres (elastin). Elastin and collagen form the ‘scaffolding’ of the face and as they diminish with age, we lose structure and elasticity in the skin resulting in facial laxity or ‘sagging’ & fine lines and wrinkles.
PDO Mono threads are short biodegradable filaments coated in a stimulatory material (PDO – polydioxanone). They are inserted under the skin – much like scaffolding on a building, to stimulate collagen and elastin production, firming and smoothing fine lines, wrinkles and ‘crepey’ skin on the face, neck and body parts such as arms.
Mono threads are minimally invasive and are performed in our clinic by our experience Cosmetic Nurse. They can be used to treat a single area e.g. marionette lines (corners of mouth) or cheeks, or multiple areas of the face and neck in a single appointment.
Mono threads are ideal for rejuvenating the skin without adding volume or ‘bulk’ to the treatment area and are a complement to volumizing treatments such as treatment with dermal fillers.
There is some immediate improvement in skin quality following treatment however as mono threads are a collagen stimulatory treatment, maximal results are gradual and can be seen over 10-12 weeks.
While they differ from thread lift procedures which actually pull the skin up, Mono threads can support the skin and help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines by promoting natural collagen production.
The mono threads used at Dermaluxe Injectables are made from Polydioxanone, a durable, flexible, and absorbable polymer. The PDO Threads promote the production of collagen and leave the patients with tighter skin that can last for 6-12 months.
Initially the threads act as the support structure to the face however over time the threads is absorbed and broken down by the body. This process results in new collagen production which tightens and supports the skin. Mono threads contain a single PDO filament, are not barbed, and are often inserted in a mesh-like pattern to ensure the best tightening effects possible. While the threads help to promote the production of collagen and tighten the skin, they do not significantly lift the skin.
After treatment, swelling and bruising may occur, which can last 5-10 days.
Sometimes a slight puckering or a dimpling of the skin may appear at the insertion points of the suture, which normally disappear between 2 and 4 weeks after treatment.
Post-treatment discomfort, swelling, redness, bruising, and discolouration may occur. These are common and normal side effects and typically resolve in a few days. Strict adherence to aftercare will help to minimise these side effects.
PDO thread Immediate aftercare – What to do at home
- Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for 48 hours.
- In the event of discomfort, take analgesia e.g. paracetamol. Discomfort is normal after a thread lift, there may be residual tenderness for up to 4 weeks post-treatment.
- To prevent the risk of infection, avoid touching the treated area with your fingers.
- Mineral make-up may be gently applied after 24 hours using clean brushes or sponges.
- Sleep face up, elevated on pillows for 7 nights minimum, preferably 2 weeks.
- Wash and pat dry your face gently without rubbing for 5 days. Do not use active ingredients in your skincare for 5 days.
- Avoid shaving (men) for one week.
- Please avoid any heat-inducing activities, including exercise of any kind aside from gentle walking, swimming pools, spas, saunas and tanning for a minimum of 2 weeks.
- No dental work for 4 weeks post-treatment.
- No facials or skin treatments for a minimum of 2 weeks post-treatment. We advise against dermal filler injections for 3 months post-treatment to minimise any cross-reactivity between the products.
- Do not massage the treatment area unless instructed to do so.
Treatment Follow-up
Results from lifting PDO threads may be immediate and typically last for 12 months. In addition, the results will continue to improve in the months following the procedure. Results are best at 3 months post-treatment.
Mono rejuvenating threads will have results at 6 to 8 weeks post-treatment.
Longevity and results depend on individual factors such as the condition of the skin prior to treatment, the presence of sun damage, adherence to aftercare, metabolism and lifestyle such as smoking. The number of threads used can also impact results and longevity.
It is important to note that a Thread Lift in NO way can deliver a surgical outcome and a surgical facelift may be necessary. The adherence to a treatment plan is also needed for optimal results and may mean re-volumisation with dermal fillers and skin treatments such as laser to ensure a good outcome.
Regular, maintenance treatments are required and essential for long-lasting results.
