PRP ( Skin and Hair) pre and post care

In order to obtain the best result from your treatment, please take note of the following after care notes for each treatment type.

PRP stands for Platelet Rich Plasma. It is one of the most natural treatments available in aesthetics, harnessing the power of your own platelets to stimulate new cell growth, healing and rejuvenation.

PRP is an exciting approach for those seeking a more natural method to tackle the signs and symptoms of ageing

The Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) facial, popularized as the ‘vampire facial’ is a treatment that uses the plasma from your blood to help stimulate skin cell regeneration in the area it’s applied. This treatment isn’t just a trend; it has real skin and hair care benefits.

It’s a 100% natural cosmetic injectable

PRP uses your blood to plasma which the practitioner then injects into the desired areas, not chemicals. This means it’s the ideal procedure for anyone who feels worried about injecting foreign substances into their body.

A Treatment for Hair Loss

When your plasma is injected into the scalp, the growth factors in your blood cells help stimulate your hair growth cells to produce thicker hair over time.

It provides total rejuvenation

PRP stimulates collagen and elastin production which thickens and tightens thinning skin, effectively smoothing wrinkles and fine lines. Because it boosts collagen, it’s also a great treatment for improving overall skin texture and tone.

2 weeks before the PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) procedure:
  • Cease oral corticosteroids (eg prednisone)
1 week before the PRP procedure:
  • Do not take any blood thinning medications, Aspirin or medications containing Aspirin for 5 days prior to the procedure. Patients can continue their Warfarin.
  • Supplements that are known to increase bruising should also be ceased–Garlic, Ginko, Ginseng, GreenTea, Vitamin E, Multi-vitamins, Omega 3,6 and fish oils.
5 days prior:
  • Topical medications & high strength cosmeceuticals containing Vitamin A, Retinol, Glycolic acid should be ceased 5 days prior as their interaction and effect on the local anaesthetic gel and PRP is not known
2 days prior to the PRP procedure:
  • Discontinue any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications or any other prescribed anti-inflammatory medications, for 2 days prior until 7 days after the PRP therapy.
  • Minimal caffeine, alcohol and fatty food and ideally have a healthy diet
  • At least one litre of water each day for good hydration (more in hot weather)
  • Microdermabrasion, aggressive peels and exfoliants should not be used as it may make the skin more sensitive to the topical local anaesthetic gel.
Day of procedure:
  • Drink at least one litre of water and refrain from excessive exercise (to assist blood collection)
  • You will not be able to take any anti-inflammatory medication (eg: Nurofen) for 7 days after the PRP procedure. We suggest having some Panadol / Panadeine available in case you need some mild pain relief.
To maximise healing benefit from the PRP therapy we strongly recommend:
  • Do not to wash your face or hair with cleansers/shampoo or apply liquid make-up for at least 12 hours post-procedure.
  • (If you need to wash your face prior, please do so only after 4 hours-please use warm water without soap.)
  • If you require pain relief, please use Panadol or Panadeine only (dose as usual for you)
  • Please do not use any anti-inflammatory medication (eg: Nurofen) or topical gel (eg:Voltaren) or oral steroids (eg: Prednisone) for 7 days post procedure
  • For patients who regularly take aspirin, you may resume it 48 hours after the procedure, unless otherwise directed by our Cosmetic Nurse Hayley for your procedure
  • Minimal alcohol, coffee, caffeine; and nil supplements that may increase bruising for 2days post procedure.
  • Nil exercise that would usually either create a flushed face or excessive facial perspiration for 24hours
  • Very rarely, patients can have a significant response to the injected PRP, and local swelling in the under eye injection area can occur. This is due to the body initiating an amplified regenerative process in the area and will usually be evident at the time of the procedure. The treating practitioner will assess, and if necessary apply ice for a short period to calm down the local response to minimise post-procedure downtime. If progressive swelling occurs after you leave the clinic, apply ice wrapped in a cloth to the area for 5-10minutesup to 3 times/day and sleep with an extra pillow for the first night to help reduce the undereye swelling
  • For Hair restoration please use a scalp massager 2-3 times a day as recommended at your appt
What does PRP stand for
PRP is an abbreviation for Platelet Rich Plasma. Plasma is the liquid portion of blood which houses all the cellular components such as red and white blood cells, as well as platelets. PRP is simply plasma rich in platelets
How does PRP work?
Platelets contain growth factors that promote healing, collagen and elastin stimulation in the cells around the injection site plumping them up, stimulating collagen and causing them to increase in volume. It has become a highly sought after non-surgical procedure for skin rejuvenation and repair, based on using your own bloods platelets to stimulate new cell growth. T he entire process takes less than 30 minutes and increases the concentration of platelets and growth factors needed for tissue regeneration by up to 1000%.
How many treatments are required?
The recommended number of sessions to treat a concern is usually 3 sessions each, a month apart. You may then need maintenance treatments every about 6–12 months.
Is there any downtime?
The downtime for PRP is minimal. There is the risk of some mild swelling and tenderness over the treatment area for 3-5 days and bruising. Any bruise will take 7-14 days to resolve.
Is it painful
The area being treated will always be numbed first which means the procedure is always comfortable.
What can PRP be used for ?
Reverse the signs of ageing, such as pigmentation, wrinkles, dark circles and loose skin whilst improving skin texture, tone, and vitality. It generally results in clearer, tighter, plumper skin. Hair loss where platelets stimulate new hair growth that is thicker and healthier.
