PDO thread pre and post care

In order to obtain the best result from your treatment, please take note of the following after care notes for each treatment type.

The PDO thread lift is a non-surgical solution designed to tighten sagging skin on the face. It is effective for areas such as the cheeks, eyebrows, jawline, neck, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines.

PDO threads are inserted into the skin’s subcutaneous layer, acting as anchors to lift and support the skin as it is raised. Once the threads are in place, they are trimmed, causing an immediate lift as the surrounding fat tissue is constricted. Unlike volumizers, PDO threads remain in the skin until they naturally dissolve, providing a gradual yet lasting improvement in skin firmness and contour.

To ensure optimal results and minimise risks, follow these guidelines before your treatment: Medication & Supplements:
  • Discontinue blood thinners (aspirin, ibuprofen, vitamin E, fish oil, turmeric) 1–2 weeks prior. Use panadol for pain relief if needed.
  • Avoid herbal supplements (St. John’s Wort, garlic, ginkgo biloba) and NSAIDs to help minimise bruising.
Lifestyle Adjustments:
  • Stop smoking 1 week before treatment to support healing
  • Avoid alcohol and caffeine 24–48 hours pre-procedure to reduce bruising
Skin Preparation:
  • Discontinue retinoids, exfoliants, or irritating skincare products 2–3 days beforehand
  • Arrive with a clean face—no makeup, creams, or skincare products on the day
Medical Considerations:
  • Inform your provider of allergies, cold sore history (antiviral medication may be prescribed), or blood-thinning prescriptions
  • Schedule the procedure at least 3 weeks before major events to allow recovery time.
  • Avoid non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs for 48 hours.
  • In the event of discomfort, take analgesia e.g. paracetamol. Discomfort is normal after a thread lift, there may be residual tenderness for up to 4 weeks post-treatment.
  • To prevent the risk of infection, avoid touching the treated area with your fingers.
  • Mineral make-up may be gently applied after 24 hours using clean brushes or sponges.
  • Sleep face up, elevated on pillows for 7 nights minimum, preferably 2 weeks.
  • Wash and pat dry your face gently without rubbing for 5 days. Do not use active ingredients in your skincare for 5 days.
  • Avoid shaving (men) for one week.
  • Please avoid any heat-inducing activities, including exercise of any kind aside from gentle walking, swimming pools, spas, saunas and tanning for a minimum of 2 weeks.
  • No dental work for 4 weeks post-treatment.
  • No facials or skin treatments for a minimum of 2 weeks post-treatment. We advise against dermal filler injections for 3 months post-treatment to minimise any cross-reactivity between the products.
  • Do not massage the treatment area unless instructed to do so.
How do PDO threads work?
Our Cosmetic Registered Nurse begins the PDO thread lift procedure by applying a numbing cream to the treatment area for your comfort. During the procedure, small blunt-tip needles are used to insert fine, absorbable polydioxanone (PDO) threads into the skin’s subcutaneous layer. Polydioxanone, a material also used in surgical wound closure, creates micro-injuries that remain in the skin, stimulating collagen and elastin production. Once the threads are in place, they are gently pulled back to lift and tighten sagging areas. Over time, the PDO threads dissolve, promoting continued collagen and elastin synthesis, which helps to firm, tighten, and rejuvenate your skin.

While generally safe, potential risks include temporary swelling, bruising, infection, asymmetry, or allergic reactions. The biodegradable threads dissolve over time, with effects lasting 6–24 months depending on skin response and thread type.
