Laser tattoo removal pre and post care

In order to obtain the best result from your treatment, please take note of the following after care notes for each treatment type

  • Avoid Sun Exposure: Stay out of direct sunlight, tanning beds, and avoid self-tanning products on the treatment area for at least 2–4 weeks before your session. Use SPF 30+ if sun exposure is unavoidable.
  • No Irritating Products: Discontinue use of retinoids, hydroquinone, bleaching creams, AHAs, BHAs, and other harsh skincare products on the area for at least 1–2 weeks prior.
  • Keep Skin Clean: Arrive with clean, product-free skin—no lotions, makeup, sunscreen, or deodorant on the area to be treated.
  • Shaving: If needed, shave the area with a clean razor and moisturizing gel on the day of treatment; avoid waxing or chemical depilatories for 2 weeks before and after.
  • Medical Considerations: Inform your provider of any new medications, medical conditions, history of cold sores, or if you are pregnant (treatment is not recommended during pregnancy).
  • Clothing: Wear loose clothing to your appointment to avoid friction on the treated area
  • Keep Area Clean and Moisturised: Gently cleanse with mild soap and water, pat dry, and apply a recommended ointment (such as Aquaphor or Vaseline-based products) 2–3 times daily until healed.
  • Dressings: Cover with non-adhesive gauze as directed, especially if blisters or scabs form. Change dressings daily or as advised.
  • Avoid Picking: Do not pick, scratch, or exfoliate scabs or blisters; allow them to heal naturally to prevent infection and scarring.
  • Limit Physical Activity: Avoid strenuous exercise, hot showers, saunas, and swimming for at least 24–48 hours post-treatment to reduce irritation and risk of infection.
  • Sun Protection: Avoid sun exposure on the treated area for at least 2–4 weeks after each session. Use SPF 30+ once the area has healed.
  • Pain and Swelling: Use cool compresses to reduce discomfort and swelling. Take paracetamol if needed, but avoid aspirin and ibuprofen as they may increase bruising.
  • Monitor Healing: Watch for signs of infection (increased redness, swelling, pus, or fever) and contact your provider if these occur.
  • Loose Clothing: Continue to wear loose clothing over the area to minimise friction and irritation during healing.

Following these pre- and post-care instructions helps ensure safe, effective laser tattoo removal and supports optimal skin healing.

How does laser tattoo removal work?
Laser tattoo removal uses targeted light energy to break down tattoo ink particles in the skin. These smaller particles are then naturally eliminated by the body’s immune system over time
Does laser tattoo removal hurt?
Most people describe the sensation as similar to a rubber band snapping against the skin. Discomfort is usually brief, and numbing creams or cooling devices can be used to increase comfort during treatment
How many sessions will i need?
The number of sessions depends on factors like tattoo size, colour, depth, location, and your skin type. Complete removal typically requires 5–15 sessions, spaced 6–12 weeks apart
Will my tattoo be completely removed?
Many tattoos can be significantly faded or fully removed, but results vary. Some colours (like white or very bright inks) are more difficult to remove and may only fade partially
Will it scar?
The risk of scarring is minimal if you follow aftercare instructions. Most modern lasers are designed to minimise skin damage, but improper aftercare can increase the risk
How soon after getting a tattoo can I have it removed?
You should wait until the tattoo is fully healed (usually 8–16 weeks) before starting removal treatments
Can I remove just part of a tattoo or fade it for a cover-up?
Yes, lasers can target specific areas for partial removal or fading to prepare for a cover-up tattoo
Can anyone get laser tattoo removal?
Most healthy adults are suitable candidates. However, it is not recommended for pregnant or breastfeeding individuals. A consultation is required to assess your suitability
